Supermarket Safety Poster Contest
History of the Safety Poster Contest
In
1988 KTA Super Stores was faced with an alarming number of customer and
employee accidents occurring in our stores. Concerned with the safety of our customers as well as
the security of their personal belongings, the company started the
Supermarket Safety Poster Contest as a means to educate our youth about
safety.
In
partnership with local area schools, 5th grade students were
chosen as a target audience. At
that level it was felt that they would be able to grasp and apply the
concepts we were trying to promote. Over
the years, as our company expanded, so did the contest. Currently the contest reaches students
and schools island-wide. The
posters are divided into three (3) regions, east, west, and north Hawai`i, based
on the location of the student’s school.
Each
year, a panel of volunteers from the community is given the difficult
task of judging the entries. Posters are judged on creativity, artistic
value, originality, and how well the message of safety is displayed in
the poster. Each regional contest
awards 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners
in each of the following categories:
-
SHOPPING CART ACCIDENTS (vehicle damage, putting carts back in the proper holders, etc.)
-
CHILD SAFETY (sitting properly in carts, not running, do not leave them unattended, etc.)
-
FOOD SAFETY (return perishables to the proper displays, safe food handling practices, etc.)
- THEFT (shoplifting, don’t leave personal belongings unattended, etc.)
-
SLIPS AND FALLS (reporting a wet spot to an employee, walk carefully on rainy days, etc.)
Over the years, the talented winners have received
prizes ranging from bicycles to digital video cameras. In addition, every student that enters
a poster receives a specially prepared “goody bag”.
